The biggest ship ever to come into Puget Sound, the 11,400-TEU CMA CGM Callisto, has docked at Terminal 18 in Seattle, heralding the arrival of mega-ships cascading into the transpacific trades."Ships continue to get larger, and we are ready for them,"said John Wolfe, Northwest Seaport Alliance chief executive officer.
"We are investing in our terminals and road and rail infrastructure to handle more cargo."The Callisto is 1,193 feet long and 150 feet wide. That is 100 feet longer than the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier. Almost two Seattle Space Needles could fit end to end across its length. It holds more than 40 per cent more cargo than most of the container ships that call at Northwest Seaport Alliance terminals.Terminal 18 is a 196-acre container terminal on Elliott Bay in Seattle. The marine terminal features 10 cranes, seven of which are super-postpanamax and three postpanamax, 50-foot water depth, on-dock and near-dock rail and a berth measuring 4,440 feet. The Callisto, which is repositioning to join the Yangtze Service, called in Vancouver, BC, before arriving in Seattle. It is to return to Shanghai.
